Abeo Teammate

Kevin Shrum, Associate Director

What Kevin Brings to the Work

Kevin brings joy to his work with educational leaders - teachers, instructional coaches, building administrators, and district administrators. As a former administrator, he knows that moments of joy, large and small, connect and energize people as they engage in the challenging  work of teaching, learning, and leading; building relationships through the work. He grounds his work in focusing on the core values and beliefs of an organization because they guide the thoughts, words, and actions of each person in the organization.

As the Associate Director at Abeo School Change, Kevin brings a deep understanding of systems to his work. When strong systems are implemented with fidelity in an organization, people know what is expected, how to approach the work, and work collaboratively to meet goals for students.  Kevin brings his problem-solving skills and belief in team to each endeavor.

Formative Experiences

Kevin’s work as an administrator focused on transforming schools, both in Colorado and New York. As a principal, he led a traditional public school and a public charter school through the transformation process. Focused on core beliefs and knowing learners, Kevin led teams to transform school culture to focus on students and building strong relationships and support systems to advance learning.

He saw the impact effective, human-centered leadership can have on schools and student learning. Kevin engaged as a building administrator for 10 years, leading in high schools as an assistant principal and elementary schools as a principal.

As a classroom teacher and instructional coach, spanning the K-12 spectrum, Kevin focused on knowing the learner to design instruction best suited to each individual and creating learning environments where the learner is empowered and feels a strong sense of belonging in the school community. Kevin began his education career teaching middle school in Washington state. One of Kevin’s professional learning highlights was being developed as an Instructional Coach. With this professional learning, he saw the immense impact reflection and working alongside other adults had on developing as a teacher. As a result, Kevin transitioned to a district instructional coach where he worked with teachers and administrators across a K-12 district. Here he developed a deepened understanding of systems and how they impact learning at all levels.

Kevin continues his work at Abeo School Change to support adults to be reflective practitioners in service of each student in the school community; spread joy through the work, and build authentic and lasting relationships.
